Neville De Silva, mature student

First studying at LSBU in 1998, Neville gained a Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, later returning for his MSc and PGCE

He completed his MSc in Older Persons Mental Health in 2009 and then his PGCE in 2010, due to enjoying his time at LSBU so much before.

Successful reputation

The decision to study at LSBU came after Neville saw several friends and relatives form successful careers after graduating. "In my opinion surely the reputation for nurse education is very high with LSBU. What most inspired me was the high number of qualifying nurses per year from LSBU in comparison with many other universities in the UK."

Having aspired to study at university all his life, Neville made sure he made the most of his time – both in the classroom and on placement. During his first course, Neville won the most outstanding student award. "The same day I graduated I was called back to the stage for the award which was a pleasant surprise." Throughout his clinical placements, his clinical work and attitude were praised by respective mentors and managers.

In fact, Neville made such a positive impression on his final third year placement, that they did not hesitate in offering him a job on graduation – and he's still working with the same clinical team now.

Rewarding career

Today, Neville is enjoying an NHS career as a Senior Mental Health Practitioner with the North East London NHS Foundation Trust. His responsibilities are many, including carrying out assessments of mental health needs and risks of individuals within a therapeutic framework, involving service users and their carers in care planning and delivery and acting as a clinical supervisor to junior colleagues and ensuring they are able to meet their learning objectives.

It's an important, yet demanding position – and one which Neville enjoys. "There's a great need for Mental Health Nursing services, and it's a very interesting and rewarding career. There's only going to be an increased need for Mental Health Nursing with an ageing population and social deprivation, so I hope I can inspire other people into this worthwhile profession."

Back for more

"In the past, at present and surely in the future I recommend a career in nursing to any prospective individual. Undoubtedly LSBU is one of the best for educating nurses. Today I am a very successful professional and for that I am very grateful to LSBU. Undoubtedly, it was at LSBU that I learned all the theoretical aspects of nursing and it was LSBU that placed me for respective placements where I gained clinical skills, knowledge and experiences."

Neville is not yet quite finished at LSBU though. He is hoping to come back for a fourth course, as he is now in the process of developing a research question for his PhD via the National Institute for Health Research. He is also helping teach as well! On our Havering campus in Essex, after demand from staff, Neville has agreed to teach pre-registration students. The LSBU Graduate Loyalty Scheme offers an exciting financial incentive for progressing from undergraduate to postgraduate study at LSBU.
