Erika Szabo, MSc Food Safety & Control, scholarship recipient

Erika Szabo

London South Bank University helped a Hungarian student, Erika, relaunch her career in the UK with a Frank Brake Scholarship

After spending seven years working in food safety roles, Erika Szabo was very clear about the kind of career development she was looking for. She had gained significant experience in her native Hungary, and wanted to look for a new challenge that would build on those skills while developing her knowledge in her specific area of interest – food safety.

Excellent performance

Little wonder then, that she applied to LSBU's MSc Food Safety & Control. In her own words, it ticked all of Erika's boxes. "Firstly, the course deals specifically with food safety, rather than food studies in general or nutrition," she explains.

She also took notice of the university's excellent performance in terms of graduate recruitment and delivering degrees that suit the needs of employers.  "The positive employment record of the graduates and the favourable feedback from industry on the course was very convincing," says Erika, who was impressed that the course is recognised by the Institute of Food Science and Technology.

 Frank Brake Scholarship

Satisfied that she was choosing the right degree at the right university, Erika turned her attention to financing her education. As part of her research, she heard about the Frank Brake Scholarship, available thanks to LSBU alumnus and entrepreneur Frank Brake. There are four scholarships available to students enrolling on the MSc Food Safety & Control, and each can be worth up to £4,000.

Stand out from the crowd

Erika applied for one of the scholarships, and was delighted to find that her strong career history in Hungary helped her stand out from other applicants. "London is an expensive city to live in, and thanks to the scholarship I can focus on my studies rather than having to work to finance my time here," says Erika. "It means I can put all of my efforts into performing to my best – I want to be able to achieve the same high standards as I did in my previous jobs."
