Alfateh Khatir, ACCA student, joined through Clearing

Applying to London South Bank University through Clearing meant Alfateh could fast-track his way to qualified accountant status and start his own company

Alfateh finished his Accounting AAT Level 3 at South Thames College and received his diploma in August 2013. At that point in the academic year he was able to apply to LSBU immediately through Clearing and received an unconditional offer straight away, allowing him to finish college and start university in the same month.

Visiting LSBU on an open day, Alfateh was keen to study here. Applying through Clearing is often a very fast way to get a university place and this was very important to Alfateh. He had an ambitious timetable for his studies and career and was keen to progress.

"My career plan is to finish the undergraduate programme within the next two years. I chose this course because it is accredited by ACCA; I will graduate from LSBU as an already partly-qualified accountant with just five professional papers left to be an ACCA member.

"In addition to that I plan to do a master's degree, which I am trying to achieve within one year after graduating, and I am preparing to start my own business."

For Alfateh, LSBU's central London campus meant he could study ACCA in the heart of a city renowned for international business. LSBU's ACCA programme also offers an alternative to the usual 'exam factory' with a more supportive learning environment and extra teaching hours.

An active member of the Accounting Student Society, student member of the Institute of Directors and a Students' Union Course Rep, Alfateh's success certainly dispels unfavourable myths that Clearing is not for successful students.

"I am doing so well now. Almost all of my grades are over seventy percent, academically I am doing a lot better than some people who did not come through Clearing. Clearing does not mean failure. Often their are just specific circumstances that mean you have to come to university through clearing.

"I am very happy that I am progressing so well, and I am very happy I chose the right place and the right course. The university location is so good and the teaching staff are tremendous. You have to succeed here unless you do not want to."
