Social Enterprise and Commercial Collaborations 2004-5 ( With Community Action Network and Department of Trade and Industry DTI)
Dr Anton Bradburn and Professor Alex Murdock have carried out this project which involved carrying out part of the research for a 'tool kit' on Social Enterprise being prepared for the DTI. The Centre's part of this work has now been just been completed (March 2005).
Previous Individual Staff Research Projects
The Centre's Research Fellows have had a diversity of interlinked research interests:
- Ruth Dawson, a founder member of the UK Evaluation Society, was the co-author of a study on evaluation practice in public services with a colleague from the University of Surrey. She is active in the research on the evaluation of public services, the evaluation of training in local government and n the work of OFSTED.
- Veronica Mole's research project investigated careers in the voluntary sector by undertaking career history/researched biography interviews with a cohort of 25 women and 25 men chief executives of medium-sized organisations. The purpose of the research was to establish career histories of men and women CEOs in the voluntary sector showing how careers are made, and pathways to the top of the organisation. The choice of medium-sized organisations allows equal numbers of female a nd male participants to comprise the study sample, thereby enabling comparisons to be made of women's and men's careers in the voluntary sector. The project built on a previous study of 321 members of the Association of Chief Executives of National Voluntary Organisations (ACENVO) undertaken in collaboration with ACENVO. The aim is to go beyond the findings of this survey to a more detailed an alysis of careers in the voluntary sector.
- Jeremy Vincent participated in the 'Capacity Building in Local Communities' research; and is developing his own publications record, notably in relation to the international literature on man aging risk in public services. .
- Anton Bradburn carried out a cross-organisational study of selected Fire Brigades in Britain, America and Denmark in collaboration with Alex Murdock. His research focused on strategic management at the corporate level and is examining how Chief Fire Officers develop, implement and manage strategy over time in emergency organisations which have necessarily short time horizons. In particular he looked into the differential funding of fire and rescue services, the quality of service delivery, the service mix and the cost to the end user. This research was successfully submitted for a PhD.
