Advanced Analytical Methods

Unit Outline

The unit is presented as a series of lectures with tutorial support. In general, each week there will be two one-hour lectures with occasional demonstrations/tutorials. The demonstration time will be spent using sophisticated analytical instrumentation, where available. Some tutorial time will be spent in preparation and practice for the oral presentations. Extra tutorial time will be given over to the student oral presentations in weeks 9 to 12.

Unit Content

Modern methods of forensic and analytical analysis. Advantages and disadvantages over alternative, traditional methods. These methods to include:

Vibrational spectroscopy. Atomic spectroscopy. X-ray fluorescence.

Advances in chromatography and chromatographic detection. Ion chromatography. Capillary electrophoresis.

Mass spectrometric techniques, e.g. FAB, MALDI-TOF. GC-MS, HPLC-MS, ICP-MS.

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, 1-D, 2-D. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy

Review of techniques and methods under current development.

Review of the current and developing methods available for collection, assessment and storage of data generated from analytical equipment.

Laboratory information systems (LIMS), image analysis, data analysis, statistical methods, storage of data short and long term.
