Ground breaking research into the effects of cross examination of children in court

Ground-breaking research on the effect of cross-examination in courts of law on the testimony of children both with and without intellectual disabilities has been carried out in the Psychology Department of London South Bank University (LSBU).

The research was carried out as part of a PhD thesis by Dr Caroline Bettenay. Caroline's research showed that almost all the children changed their testimony during cross-examination, usually from correct to incorrect.

Research that informs and has real world impact

Such applied research is important as it highlights the possibility of miscarriages of justice and it also informs policy around court proceedings and the special measures in place to support children who have to give evidence in court.
