LSBU Academic Hits the Headlines with House of Lords Report

Dr Matthew Bond, Course Director for Social Research Methods, recently published a report examining the number of House of Lords peers who belonged to elite clubs, such as The Garrick, Pratts, White’s and the Carlton.

Dr Bond's analysis, which has featured in both The Telegraph Newspaper and in Sociology (The Journal of the British Sociological Society), found a higher proportion of conservative peers (70%) were members of such clubs compared to both Liberal Democrat (42%) and Labour (28%) peers. In Dr Bond’s words “The evidence is consistent with clubs offering social unity to elites with vested interested in traditional status structures”.
