Social Sciences

We have a strong national and international reputation in our main fields of Sociology, Criminology, Politics, and Development Studies. Our work is seen as intellectually cutting edge in equality, criminology, race, sexuality, media and politics and international development. Our teaching focuses on current issues and our students are engaged with the urgent social and political challenges of today. Subjects include international politics, media and politics, green criminology, policing, sex trafficking and drugs. We are intellectually innovative and our academic and research activities help shape public debate. The Department liaises closely with the Weeks Centre for Social and Policy Research: many members of DSS also sit within the Weeks Centre's three research groups: Families and Social Capital, IDEARs and CCJRG.
