We have a thriving, supportive, and friendly research environment within the Psychology Department, and three dynamic research groupings, each boasting a range of strong links with practitioners and service users. Our research groups focus on research in: Investigative Forensic Psychology; Psychological Applications in Culture and Society; and Developmental Disorders.

Our staff are active in research, a recent example being the ground-breaking research undertaken on the effect of cross-examination in courts of law on the testimony of children both with and without intellectual disabilities. The research was carried out as part of a PhD thesis by senior lecturer Dr Caroline Bettenay. Caroline's research showed that almost all the children change their testimony during cross-examination, usually from correct to incorrect. Such applied research is important as it highlights the possibility of miscarriages of justice and it also informs policy around court proceedings and the special measures in place to support children who have to give evidence in court.

Centre for Research in Psychology

Our department's research is coordinated by the Centre for Research in Psychology. The Centre focuses on internationally recognised, theoretical and applied research with "real world" impact. We are fast developing a track record of internationally recognised publications. We made our first ever submission to the Research Assessment Exercise, RAE2008, with significant success. Not only were 70% of our staff submitted, which is a high percentage for any new university, over 90% of our publications were rated at the “international” level, of which 25% were rated as “internationally excellent”. Our overall research profile indicated that 70% of our work was at the international standard.

We have a thriving, supportive, and friendly research environment; and three dynamic research groupings, each boasting a range of strong links with practitioners and service users.
