Why study at LSBU

By coming to LSBU you're joining a university that knows how to value and support its students. We're aware how important it is for you to be given the right skills and attitude to enter your chosen profession. That's why we are accredited by the Bar Standards Board and the Solictors Regulation Authority and put supporting our students and their future employability as our priorities.

Our strengths

We put teaching and the student learning experience at the heart of what we do in the Law Department. Our students greatly value the support which we provide them and particularly praise our compulsory personal tutoring system.

Staff expertise

Our highly experienced teaching staff regularly commit to training, scholarship and research programmes to develop and refine their subject knowledge and effectiveness working closely with local and national legal professionals. These relationships give our students the best possible opportunities to plan and develop their careers as well as ensuring our courses are relevant and appropriate.

Many of our staff continue to practise Law and are therefore able to give examples of their work to explain legal points covered in their lectures. This brings the lectures 'to life' and makes learning the law even more interesting for our students as they understand how the law they learn with us is applied in practice. For example, Caron Thatcher worked alongside Imran Khan (solicitor for the Lawrence family) through the many stages of legal proceedings including the private prosecution, inquest, public enquiry and the recent trial that resulted in the conviction of two men for the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

Courses that prepare for the working world

By working closely with leading legal practitioners and the local legal profession we provide our students with the best possible opportunities to plan and develop their careers. This also ensures our courses are relevant and appropriate for those wanting to practise law or to work in any of the many related fields where legal knowledge and skills are an advantage.

Our LLB (Hons) degree includes a Working in the Law module, that focuses exclusively on practising professional skills and pursuing career development with an emphasis on legal placements and volunteering. A law qualification can lead you into many careers.

In September 2011 we opened the LSBU Legal Advice Clinic, staffed by our trained students, working under the supervision of solicitors. The Clinic provides our students with the fantastic opportunity to acquire work experience and invaluable skills requried by employers.

A key location

Taking advantage of our central location and excellent, modern facilities, our department has developed a thriving relationship with the legal profession. We appoint leading lawyers as visiting professors and lecturers, host continuing professional development training seminars for local solicitors and encourage our many successful alumni to give careers advice and offer work placements to our current students. You'll find we're just a short walk from the Royal Courts of Justice as well as being right in the heart of London's cultural centre, the South Bank.

Our mission

Our mission is to aim for excellence and innovation in teaching, learning and scholarship. We also hold an active commitment to equal opportunities and we co-operate with employers and other institutions and organisations in the UK and abroad who share our aims.

If you have the potential to succeed, we have the courses, the staff, the skills, the experience and the vision to enable you to realise your potential.
