Placements and volunteer projects

We recognise how important it is for us to prepare our students for pursuing their career after graduation. We endeavour to give all of our students a developed sense of professionalism to assist with this. Through this we also expose them to a working environment to enable them to appreciate and be a part of the law in practice.

Tsisti Hombarume, 3rd Year Law student from London South Bank University talks about Placements in the Law Department.

Following the revalidation of our LLB (Hons) course in 2009 we introduced the compulsory module, 'Working in the Law', for all our second year full-time and part-time students. The module focuses on the attributes and skills the profession requires. As an integral part of it we encourage and assist our students to obtain relevant work placements and volunteering opportunities.

Our students have enjoyed successful placements within a varied range of organisations including:

The London Borough of Southwark
Our Law department has set up a placement programme in conjunction with Southwark Council which has proved to be a huge success. Find out more about the student experience on the placement programme.
Employment Advocacy Services
Dawn Oliver LLB Hons, founder of Employment Advocacy Services (EAS), is an LSBU graduate and offers students helpful tips on interviews as well as placement positions at EAS.
Barnet Law Centre
David Rommer is a former LSBU student who is now a qualified solicitor working as a supervising solicitor at the law centre, who offer placements to current LLB students. David also gives practical advice to students through our Professionals Wall, a dedicated careers area within the Law Blackboard site.
Release
Release is a charitable organisation offering advice and assistance on drugs and the law. LSBU students have actively participated in their volunteer scheme. Volunteers are given training to provide help to clients over the phone and to carryout research into relevant areas of the law in assisting the legal team.

These placements create valuable opportunities and experiences students draw upon, reflect within their personal development and provide preparation for future employability.

This work experience gave me an insight into how the public sector functions, and most importantly, the role they play in influencing and regulating the society of Southwark. The opportunity to work in the legal department gave me the chance to mix with a variety of different people dealing with different aspects of law.
