As part of our commitment to Justice and Human Rights, the Law Department hosts annual events such as updates on Human Rights delivered by our Visiting Professors, Sir Geoffrey Bindman, Joel Bennathan QC and Imran Khan. We also host the Young Legal Aid Lawyers Question Time and occasional events such as our recent inter-professional conference, Responding to Rape, and meetings and seminars for Burmese human rights campaigners.
The principles that shape all of our courses
Individual members of the Law Department regularly take part in human rights projects as experts and consultants, often with the British East West Centre. In recent years, individual members of staff have taken part in projects in Armenia, Belarus, Croatia and Zambia. In Armenia we worked with the Judges of the Supreme Court on the doctrine of precedent and the use of case law.
In Belarus we have worked for many years with the State Judicial Training Institute. In Croatia, we provide teachers for an annual human rights summer school run by the European Law Students Association. In Zambia we are working on an Access to Justice project to open new law centres in rural areas with the Law Association of Zambia and the South London Law Society.
Law academics have also taken part in election monitoring in Belarus, Kazakstan and Kyrgystan. All this work supports and inform our teaching on programmes such as the LLM International Human Rights and Development. In our most exciting new project is to open a Legal Advice Centre at the university, supported by student volunteers.
