As a highly regarded provider of law related expertise at both local and national level, we offer consultancy services that can benefit a range of organisations. Through our work we continue to forge strong partnerships with the local community, government agencies and policy and funding bodies.
Our experience can benefit a wide range of organisations at both local and national levels
Our tutors have impressive extensive experience in Criminal Litigation. For example, Senior Lecturer in Law Caron Thatcher worked alongside Imran Khan (solicitor for the Lawrence family) through the many stages of legal proceedings including the private prosecution, inquest, public enquiry and the recent trial that resulted in the conviction of two men for the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
Caron has also acted on behalf of the family of Dr Francisco, bringing a very rare civil action against the murder suspect. This led to the re-investigation of the case in which the suspect was found guilty and charged with murder.
We have been teaching Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to final year LL.B. students for over 15 years. The ADR modules offered are well respected by the mediation profession, having been originally written by a leading researcher, Professor Linda Mulcahy. The modules have since been led, taught and developed by the Module Leader, Senior Lecturer in Law Katherine Stylianou, who has been a practising family mediator since 1995 and is recognised by the Legal Services Commission as able to mediate legally aided cases covering all issues.
The skills taught on the ADR modules at LSBU cover the basic skills used by a mediator. Students are taught and practice, through role plays, how to appropriately use principles and ethics of mediation. There is emphasis on students being reflective about their skills, with constant reference to these principles and ethics.
Students are able to join the College of Mediators as student members as soon as they commence studying ADR.
The Law department also boasts some excellent expertise in Property Law and Housing Law. Principal Lecturer in Law Louise Andronicou has been involved as a consultant, tutor and moderator with the distance learning Land Registry Qualification – the degree-level diploma which provides a comprehensive and detailed consideration of property law, including the law and practice of land registration.
Lecturer in Law Alan Russell, who has a housing and public law litigation background and is a member of the Housing Law Practitioners Association, is an experienced court advocate with more than 20 years experience as a duty solicitor covering the housing possession list at various London county courts. Alan has also advised on the Law Society's Access to Justice Committee in relation to the public funding of housing advice and litigation and given advice to the Law Commission on public funding and housing law reform.
The Department has a strong set of experts, consultants and international advisors in the field of Human Rights and hosts a number of annual events and conferences. Head of the Law Department Andy Unger has worked as a consultant in former communist countries such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Georgia. In the South Caucuses, his most recent working has been with the British East-West Centre, designing and supervising FCO funded projects offering Human Rights training to lawyers and Justice Officials in the region. Currently, he is working with LSBU and the South London Law Society, in collaboration with the Law association of Zambia, on an Access to Justice in Zambia project involving stakeholder conferences and fund-raising for new law centres in Zambia.
Senior Lecturer in Law Caron Thatcher has acted as an international election monitor on behalf of the United Kingdom since 2003. She has observed elections in many parts of the former Soviet Union including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and also in Russia itself - monitoring the final election of Mr. Putin in 2004.
