Throughout their time with us our students take part in a number of practical assignments and projects, often with a focus on considering the links between theory, research and practice. For example, because students on the PGCE Primary/Early Years course will be teaching art as part of the national curriculum, we teach them how to develop stop-motion animation. They then undertake a creative project where they develop their own animation film with with a theme related to education for sustainability. Here are some examples of our students' work.
MSc Education for Sustainability
Most students on the MSc Education for Sustainability are in employment, working in a range of settings including non governmental organisations, schools and museums. Part of the programme includes a residential week. In 2009 this took place in Kenya.
PGCE Primary
Students on all our initial teacher education courses spend time on placement in a school. The opportunity to experience high quality training in school, and to learn from the example of experienced teachers is an essential part of the journey to becoming a teacher.
PGCE
Students on our PGCE courses collaborated with children and teachers from over 20 primary schools on The Charlie Chaplin Project, a large scale community history project which focused on life in Southwark and Lambeth during Chaplin's childhood. Participating in the project allowed them to experience how creative interpretation of a thematic cross-curricular approach to stimulating children can extend the range of their learning experiences.
