Places still available for Primary PGCE for January 2013

Teaching is a challenging, rewarding and varied career. It requires a high level of knowledge across a range of subjects, well developed skills in teaching and an understanding of the learning needs of children and young people. You may also want to consider our Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP), which is an employment-based route into teaching. As an alternative route to qualification you should compare the GTP and the PGCE to see which qualification best suits you.

Teaching placements in Central and South East London

School experience placements for a PGCE are sourced by the University. We have relationships with a large number of schools and nurseries, focused in Central and South East London, but also across Greater London.

My first teaching placement was probably the highlight of the PGCE at South Bank. I was lucky enough to be at a school with a really passionate Head Teacher and Assistant Head who inspired me throughout my six week placement.

PGCE applications through the GTTR

All applications for study on PGCE teacher training courses must go to the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR).

How the GTTR application process works

  • The application process is quite similar to UCAS. When you apply for a PGCE you may select up to four institutions on your application form, listed in order of preference. The GTTR then send the application to the University listed as your first choice; please apply early to avoid disappointment as places fill quickly.
  • You should try to apply for teacher training as early as possible. You can make your PGCE application from early October the year before you intend to study.
  • The application process costs £19
  • References are a compulsory part of the GTTR application process. If you are still in higher education (or have recently left) then your reference should come from your academic tutor.
  • The GTTR sends out your application. The first choice University will then make a decision on whether to invite your for interview. If after interview you are offered a place you will be informed by the GTTR. If, however, you are not successful the GTTR will pass your application to the next institution indicated on your application form
  • You can track your application online through the GTTR track system.
  • When you receive an offer from an institution you must confirm that you want to accept them by confirming your intentions with the GTTR.

More information on the application process is available from www.gttr.ac.uk or by calling the GTTR Customer Service Unit on 0870 112 2205.
