GTP – teacher training courses

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is an employment-based model of teacher training. On the GTP you can earn for your work as an unqualified teacher at the same time as gaining your Qualified Teacher Status. This vocational teaching qualification is a popular choice for anyone with a degree looking to change career. The PGCE is the more traditional, University-based, teaching qualification which includes school work experience placements. London South Bank offers both types of teaching qualification.

We offer one year GTP courses in Primary and Early Years (ages 3-11) and Secondary Mathematics (ages 11-16).

Finding a school willing to sponsor you on the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)

All applicants should already have a school in place prepared to support your training throughout the GTP programme, before completing an application. If you do not have a school in place you can approach schools to see if they are willing to support you. Finding employment initially as a Teaching Assistant or a Learning Support Worker is an ideal way to gain school experience and is a common route for securing the offer of a GTP training place. You could look in the Times Educational Supplement as well as Local Authority websites and local papers for advertised vacancies.

GTP partner schools and conditions of TDA funding

We predominantly work with schools in the Greater London area, specifically inner London boroughs. However, we will consider applications from across London. Schools must not be in special measures.

While we accept applicants from non-state schools and alternative education institutions applicants will not be eligible for a TDA funded place.

Currently, for 2011/12, the TDA salary fund is £17,000 for inner London schools and £16,000 for outer London schools. These figures are subject to annual change.

GTP applications through the TDA

All applicants for GTP courses must go to the TDA website, search for 'London South Bank' and click the apply button to make an application. All applications are online and through the TDA; you cannot apply directly to the University.

For more details on the application procedure see the individual course pages.
