We have an important, enduring and consistent mission to create student opportunity for future success. We have much to be proud of and aspire to be the best in our field. We intend to make this happen by implementing our vision.
To be the most admired UK university for creating professional opportunity. We intend to be a source of pride to our students, our staff and the communities we serve.
With careful financial planning we're ensuring the successful future of LSBU. Over the past five years we've invested over £50m in modern teaching facilities. These innovations continue. 2012 saw the opening of our new Student Centre and our new Enterprise Centre, set within a run of Grade II listed Georgian terraces, will open later this year. A major innovation, the Entreprise Centre will house incubation space, allied retail units, meeting rooms and an open public reception space, gallery and café for students and staff to make connections with business and industry. Across all our courses you'll find a range of facilities that support and develop our students throughout their studies. Our ongoing investment and development in staff, systems, infrastructure and facilities support academic endeavours at every stage.
We encourage all at LSBU to realise their ambitions. We're here to help all our students achieve their potential and place great emphasis on their future employability, working widely with industry to ensure course content is highly relevant for the workplace. Our track record in supporting students from diverse backgrounds to achieve their career objectives is very strong. We're acknowledged for being a top 20 UK university for graduate starting salaries (Sunday Times University Guide 2013) and our alumni take leading positions in diverse sectors such as property, PR, the NHS and NGOs.
Former students have a variety of high profile and high powered positions and there are a number of household names among our alumni including Ann Milton MP: Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Department of Health), Greg Searle MBE: Olympic Gold medal rower, TV property guru, Phil Spencer and Dame Karlene Davies, one of the most respected female figures in the NHS and UK's first black woman trade union leader. The quality of teaching and achievement at LSBU is excellent. This is borne out by the fact that all of our courses are accredited by or developed in association with the leading professional bodies. The ongoing programme of investments in our teaching environment give students the space to learn, opportunities to meet with staff and support services, as well as modern, inspiring facilities to realise their aspirations.
We're a popular university for businesses seeking relevant expertise to improve productivity and performance through Knowledge Transfer. We're also ranked first in London for Occupational Therapy, and second for Mental Health Nursing, Adult Nursing, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography.
LSBU is proud to be a UK leader in providing education to students from non-standard backgrounds, often who are the first in their families to go to university. We exceed all national benchmarks for widening access, and our focus for campus investment reinforces our support to all students to help them succeed. We offer many access routes into education and many flexible study options.
Around half of our students study part-time and with day release and distance learning available to many of our postgraduate students we always have something fresh to offer. We run many programmes in local schools creating opportunity for students to experience university before they join us and a strong programme of Student Ambassadors who work as education mentors in local schools.
We're always interested in finding out what our students think of their LSBU experience. The university was recently nominated for a top award for our pioneering Student Shadowing Scheme, which offers academics and staff the opportunity to experience the life of a modern University student first-hand.
