Staff and student engagement
We are constantly developing new ways for students and staff to get involved.
Sustainability at inductions
New staff are given an introduction to sustainability as part of their induction day.
For new students, sustainability features at the following events:
- Welcome week
- Information in the ‘LSBU passport’ guide/information pack
- Halls Ambassadors are given a sustainability briefing and background information, which they then pass on to all new Halls students at flat meetings
Staff and student initiatives
LSBU has its very own Student Sustainability Society - the Green Beans. The Green Beans are dedicated to raising participation in eco-friendly activities, and always welcome new ideas. Get involved and join the Green Beans Facebook page to find out about the next event.
The Students' Union
The Students' Union runs environmental initiatives and events in partnership with the University. For more information please visit LSBSU or contact your Student Union rep.
LSBU's Sustainability Team provides support to the Students' Union in the form of:
- Energy and water consumption data, as well as waste and recycling information
- Time and support for Union staff tasked with delivering sustainability improvements
LSBU arranges an annual programme of events to celebrate sustainability. One key highlight in the calendar is Sustainability Fortnight, taking place in February and March, which brings together Go Green Week and Fairtrade Fortnight. Find out more about our 2017 programme (PDF File 1,487 KB).
Whole Earth exhibition
The Sustainability Team hosted and curated an impactful photography exhibition, Whole Earth?, during the 2016/17 academic year. Its goal was to promote solutions that address challenges across the sustainability spectrum, from climate change to sustainable consumption, through photography, imagery and graphics. Read the Whole Earth case study (PDF File 1,071 KB).
Halls Cook-off event
The Sustainability Team organised a Halls Cook-off event in December 2016 to raise awareness about food waste issues, teach cooking skills and raise the profile of sustainability issues. The event was zero-waste and used edible but unwanted food and compostable plates and cutlery. Read the Halls Cook-off case study (PDF File 986 KB).
Sustainable travel - cycling
The Sustainability Team supports sustainable travel through a variety of initiatives including providing cycling maps, offering free bicycle maintenance sessions and bike racks around campus, and a Cycle to Work scheme. Read the Sustainable Travel case study (PDF File 1,945 KB).
LSBU has its own staff and student Gardening Club, which has several regular members who are helping improve the biodiversity of green spaces on campus. Read the Gardening Club case study (PDF File 2,593 KB).
Sustainability-themed local walks
The Sustainability Team has created a series of walking guides designed to highlight the best local green spaces around campus. The walks aim to encourage a ‘sustainable lifestyle’ by recognising the connection between sustainability and health and well-being. There are two guided walks: Bermondsey (PDF File 1,263 KB) and Borough/Bankside (PDF File 2,993 KB).
