Ruth Richards

Director of Education and Student Experience

 

Ruth Richards is Director of Education and Student Experience for the School of Law and Social Science. She is responsible for the strategic management and development of all teaching-related issues within the School.

She has been a Chartered Town Planner since 1992. Prior to joining London South Bank University in 1996, she worked at the London Docklands Development Corporation and was the Director at Planning Aid for London for seven years.

She is active within the Royal Town Planning Institute, sitting on a number of committees and contributing to national debate concerning planning education and related matters. From 2001-2007 she was also employed as the Institute's Conduct and Discipline Officer and was responsible for ensuring members acted in a professional manner.

Ruth was a Board Member for East Homes (housing association) from 2004-2011, and was the Honorary Treasurer for Planning Summer School (an educational charity) from 2010 to 2015. She was also the Chief Examiner for Planning Law for the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives during 2014 and 2015.

She is also actively involved in the development and delivery of planning education throughout the UK through activities within the Royal Town Planning Institute including:

  • Honorary Secretary for the Conference of Heads of Planning Schools (until 2015)
  • Member of RTPI's Education and Lifelong Learning Committee (until 2015)
  • Member of the RTPI Education Steering Group
  • RTPI Chair of Queen's University Belfast Partnership Board
  • RTPI Chair of Plymouth University Shadow Partnership Board and dialogue member
  • Assessor for the RTPI Assessment of Professional Competence (all categories)
  • External Examiner at Oxford Brookes University (2010-2014) and Kingston University (2011-2015) for their planning programmes
  • External Examiner at Leeds Beckett University (2016 to present)

In 2016 she was awarded the Outstanding Service Award for her contribution to planning education and membership.

Ruth was a Board Member for East Homes (housing association) from 2004-2011, and was the Honorary Treasurer for Planning Summer School (an educational charity) from 2010 to 2015. She was also the Chief Examiner for Planning Law for the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives during 2014 and 2015.

She has also been a member of the editorial board for Local Economy (2011-2015).

Ruth has been teaching on town planning, urban regeneration and housing courses for the past twenty years.  Her specialist areas are:

  • Town Planning Practice
  • Planning in London
  • Community Involvement in Planning
  • Planning Law
  • Ethics and Professional Conduct in Planning

She also tutors students in both undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations within the planning, housing and urban regeneration fields.

Ruth has been a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute since 1992 and is active across a range of committees and areas of work, but particularly those associated with planning education and with assessing the Assessment of Professional Competence.  She is an assessor both for graduate entrants and Associate applications.

  • Member of CPD Panel, Royal Town Planning Institute (1998-2001)
  • Member of London Branch Executive, Royal Town Planning Institute (1997-2001)
  • Continuing Professional Development Volunteer Counsellor, RTPI (1991-6)
  • Member of Planning Aid Panel, RTPI (1989-96)

Ruth has also been the Chief Examiner for Planning Law for the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (2014-15).

Ruth has been active in a number of charitable organisations throughout her professional career including:
