Mohammad Ghavami is Professor of Telecommunications Engineering and the founder and leader of Biomedical Engineering and Communications (BiMEC) research at LSBU.  He has been very successful in developing the multi-disciplinary expertise within BiMEC. His expertise lies in the areas of Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, Adaptive and smart antenna, wireless sensor networks, and Telecommunication systems for healthcare applications.

Dr Ghavami has published over 150 papers, two books (Ultra Wideband Signals and Systems and Adaptive Antenna Systems) and three US patents on various areas of UWB systems, smart antennas, wireless technologies and telehealth applications. He has won the esteemed European Information Society Technologies (IST) prize in 2005 and two invention awards from Sony. He has been the Guest Editor of the IEE Proceedings Communications, Special Issue on Ultra Wideband Systems in 2006 and the Associate Editor of the Special Issue of IEICE Journal on UWB Communications in 2005.

Prof Ghavami has been teaching over twenty different topics since 1985.

His undergraduate teaching modules include:

  • DSP for Communication Engineering
  • Analogue, Digital and Wireless Communications
  • Networks and Broadband Systems
  • Introduction to Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • Electrical Fundamentals

His postgraduate teaching modules include:

  • Wireless Communications and Satellite Systems
  • Optical, Microwave UWB Systems

He is currently supervising six PhD students.

He has recently been awarded an EPSRC grant related to ultra wideband sensors (EP/K002473/1, £911k, "DANCER"). Prior to this appointment he was with King's College London from 2002 to 2010 where he secured several research grants including EPSRC (GR/T21771/01, £300k, Measurement and Modelling of the  Spatio-temporal Ultra Wideband Radio Channel) and NHS (MHF9401, £114k, Wireless Monitoring of Physiological Signals). He has published numerous technical papers in international journals and conferences on areas related to ultra wideband adaptive array systems and medical applications.
