As a practising food microbiologist Mandy Maidment is passionate about science and scientific education because she believes that both are fundamental to future prosperity in a world characterised by rapid change and where inclusive opportunities should be available to all.  Being Head of the Food Sciences Division at LSBU enables her to facilitate and support a highly committed team of professional scientists in pursuit of these goals.

Mandy draws on nearly 30 years of experience as an active scientist and educator at London South Bank University and works with students from sixth-forms through to doctoral research.  She also has an extensive portfolio of experience as consultant with partners in the food and allied industries.  Mandy currently teaches food and biosciences students on the University’s undergraduate programmes.  Her postgraduate teaching embraces Masters’ level food science courses and the supervision of postgraduate and doctoral dissertations.

As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Mandy has a particular interest in teaching and learning innovations as well as curricular design.  She believes that progress in this area is vital to the education of professional scientists who are not only equipped with a thorough body of scientific knowledge, but also the imaginative understanding that leads to innovation.  Her pedagogic innovation includes the use of transactional learning methods that encourage students to become decision makers and problem solvers.  Mandy believes that these methods can play their part in promoting more inclusive participation and enable wider access to Science Education and all that this can afford students and society.

A commitment to equality, recognition of diversity and the promotion of inclusion is fundamental to Mandy Maidment’s work as a scientist and science educator; being an active member of the University’s Athena Swan initiative enables her to pursue and achieve these goals.

With this range of experience, Mandy is presently seconded to the Quality and Enhancement team in the role of Academic Director for Collaborative Partnerships. A significant aspect of this role is in supporting and developing LSBU’s relationships with its Transnational Education partners.
