Safia Barikzai joined London South Bank University as a Senior Lecturer in 2007. She is now an Associate Professor. She was a PRECIOUS Awards 2016 finalist in the 'Outstanding Woman in STEM' category.
She has taught on and led a number of different teaching modules, and was recently appointed the post of Business IT Pathway Leader. Safia serves as the Informatics Placement coordinator and is actively looking for placement links with potential employers.
Safia was a Lecturer in Computing at the University of Wollongong from July 2002 to March 2005. She was course coordinator for a Masters programme, which was taught offshore in Hong Kong and included an Industry component. She was also responsible for managing the postgraduate dissertations, working with link tutors in Hong Kong to ensure successful completion of the dissertations. She was a member of the School's Education Committee and participated in new course development. Safia completed the required teaching and learning certification whilst at Wollongong.

Safia's research interest is in educational technology and in particular courseware engineering. She started her academic career in 1996 as a research assistant and courseware developer on a Teaching and Learning Technology Programme (TLTP) funded project involving seven UK Higher Education institutions. She was responsible for the production of courseware for Systems Analysis and Design subject area, working with an academic team at London South Bank University. This project received further funding to investigate dissemination networks and collaborative tools to improve student engagement.
During this phase of the project, Safia worked at the University of Brighton (1998 - 2000). Safia's earlier career exposed her to the research community and she presented at numerous national and international conferences.
Dr. Safia Barikzai completed her PhD research in Courseware Engineering; her thesis was entitled "Integrating Courseware into Collaborative Learning Environments" (completed Nov 2006).
Safia is currently supervising two PhD students.
She is a reviewer and joint chair of the 2013 BCS eLearning Specialist group 18th INSPIRE conference. She is also responsible for managing the conference web spaces.

Dr. Barikzai is an active member of the British Computer Society and serves on the Quality Specialist group as the academic liaison.
Safia is originally from Afghanistan and came to the UK as a refugee, and hence she is passionate about widening participation and giving opportunities to those who have faced adversity. To this end, Safia did voluntary work for six months at Refugee Action Kingston and she has been instrumental in LSBU's donation of Personal Computers to the refugee community.
