125 anniversary

Borough Polytechnic birds eye view circa 1910

This year we are celebrating 125 years of LSBU helping students, businesses and the local community become what they want to be

London South Bank University (LSBU) – originally the Borough Polytechnic Institute – laid down its roots in south London in 1892 and has been improving the lives of students, businesses and the local community ever since. It is one of the city’s oldest universities.

Over the past 125 years LSBU has expanded and grown into one of London’s largest universities, offering vocationally-relevant, accredited and professionally recognised education and support to students from the UK and overseas.

From providing a safe haven as a community centre serving hot meals during the Second World War, to attracting one-quarter of students from the local area in its annual intake today, LSBU remains rooted in the local community and dedicated to delivering quality education to all.

As Entrepreneurial University of the Year 2016, LSBU is renowned for embedding enterprise in education, providing students and local businesses with the support and knowledge to build their own successful businesses.

While reflecting on its successes over the past 125 years, LSBU also looks forward to exciting and ambitious times ahead. It has set itself a target to be London’s top Modern University by 2020 – we’re already No.1 for graduate prospects - and strives to continue transforming lives.

As LSBU celebrates this impressive milestone we want to hear stories from past and present students, staff and LSBU community members. Find out how you can contribute your story.
