LSBU Saturday Club
The National Art&Design Saturday Club series at LSBU is a free 30-week programme for 13-16 year olds that runs during term time
From October 2018 LSBU will be hosting a series of free Saturday Clubs for young people in Years 9-11 (13-16 year-olds), starting with a National Art&Design Saturday Club.
The National Art&Design Saturday Club is a 30-week programme that will run during term time and explores the link between art and design and computer science.
LSBU’s School of Arts and Creative Industries and School of Engineering will deliver the Club. They will offer expert tuition, with the support of trained student ambassadors, and expose club members to diverse cultural spaces and state of the art facilities.
- Supporting students with their GCSEs
- Access to world class facilities and expert tuition – free of charge
- Introducing participants to the concept of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths)
- Experience of a higher education environment
- Broadening horizons through trips and masterclasses
Research by the Saturday Club Trust has shown that 80% of Club members achieve at least one grade higher than expected at GCSE in related subjects and, by the end of the year, 70% want to pursue a career in an industry they’ve been exposed to from joining their Club.
LSBU is introducing a series of Saturday Clubs as part of the University’s commitment to support young people from our local community to fulfil their potential.
The University is joining other institutions as part of a growing Saturday Club Network, delivering free tuition to young people for up to 30 Saturdays per year.
Opportunities for the local community
LSBU’s mission is ‘to be recognised as an enterprising civic university’. We want to connect young people with opportunities and experiences that transform their perspectives and outlook on life. Saturday Clubs can help us do this as part of long-term outreach programmes which are proven to be effective in instigating long-term change.
Partnering with the Saturday Club Trust
Our outreach is driven by a collaborative approach to engaging under-represented groups with higher education and to advancing our mission to transform the lives of young people. We are partnering with the Saturday Club Trust because they share our values around working collaboratively to expose disadvantaged young people to new and varied experiences.
